Welcome to Art’s Open Door!

I’m so glad you’re here.

Whether you are a professional artist, a hobbyist, or someone who enjoys getting goosebumps from good art, Art’s Open Door is an invitation to consider art and art-making through a spiritual lens.

What to Expect

Through weekly-ish essays, poems, prompts, and other reflections, we will explore the intersection of art and faith.

My goal is to help you:

  • Let art be a light, offering hope and joy in a dark world

  • Value process and presence over products and performance (Also, I do love me some alliteration! 😆)

  • Connect with the Sacred through the act of making and viewing art

    Hi, I’m Merideth!

I am a Juilliard-trained oboist, Doctor of Musical Arts, author, coach, and speaker who helps self-identified artists and the creatively curious discover (or recover!) the joy of making. You can read all the official “about me” things here.

I am the wife of a Guatemalan-American Presbyterian clergyman (PCUSA) and mom to two little-ish ones living in Metro Detroit, Michigan, USA. I’m an Enneagram 4 wing 3 who loves making sourdough and feels most at home walking the streets of New York City. I struggle with autoimmune illness and chronic fatigue, so if that’s you, too, you’re not alone. You can follow along with more day-to-day happenings here.

As a writer, I love illuminating the spiritual path of the artist and exploring the intersection of art, faith, and the human experience.

My public writing life started on my award-winning podcast Artists for Joy, where I help artists get unstuck, turn down the inner critic, and embrace imperfection.

What inspires me: the "sacred ordinary" of Frederick Buechner, the eternal joy of J.S. Bach, the wholehearted faith of Rachel Held Evans, the cosmic wonder of Madeleine L’Engle, the vibrant, earthy creations of Christi Belcourt, and the deep, melodic yearning of Frederic Chopin (to name a few!) I talk a lot about what people call “fine art,” but I find God in anything crafted with an honest intention of connecting us to each other and the divine.

My mission is to help you open your own door to that conversation, using what I call contemplative creativity and art as a spiritual gateway.

I created Art’s Open Door as a sanctuary for those who believe that beauty is a bridge—back to ourselves, to each other, and to God.

Here’s to walking through together.
